Triticale As An Iron Rich Food

Triticale is a hybrid of wheat and rye. It is not a common grain but its use is on the rise in some regions where it is grown more easily than wheat. As with all grains, triticale contains iron inhibitors that limit your digestion of the high levels of iron in the triticale. On this website we recommend that you prepare your grain-based foods such as wheat, spelt, barley, rye, sorghum, and kamut with the intent to reduce the iron inhibitors.

If you are to consume triticale as a hot breakfast cereal, for instance, it is best to soak it in warm water overnight (and keep it in a warm spot during that time) to reduce the iron inhibitors. If you use triticale in baking, we recommend that you grind your flour fresh. You will actually cut down your food expense this way and add just a bit of time to your baking. Sourdough recipes are ideal as well — we have sourdough processes here on this site that make sourdough baking easy.
